UV R&D Manager

The successful candidate will lead the Core R&D team and be expected to make strong contributions to solve customer problems, initiate projects, identify and protect IIP and identify new product areas for innovation.

The UV R&D Manager works cross-functionally with business development, sales and market development colleagues, and closely with customers.  Collaborates and coordinates activities with peers in Europe and Asia.

This position has responsibility for the research teams and platforms supporting the regional business.  Research impacts the regional business performance including sales and earnings, operating margins, return on capital, ability to enter new markets and/or defense of existing market positions, with new or improved products, processes and applications.

The position is responsible for the work process excellence and project content for innovation and product development projects within the Core segment.

Overall R&D Leadership: 40%

  • Management of staff including goal setting, appraisals and career development for all group members
  • Manage conflicts relating to personal or diverse viewpoints
  • Represents the R&D department on cross functional business teams, other internal teams and to upper management
  • Recognize other’s abilities and delegate technical responsibilities where appropriate. Effectively uses technical and leadership skills to influence and direct technical programs to achieve success
  • Teach and mentor staff on company’s products, customers, applications, technologies and markets
  • Promotes safe behavior and takes responsibility for safe lab operations and continuously fosters a safe working environment. In compliance with all company policies
  • Hold team members and subordinates accountable to deliver quality results on time and within budget

Core:  Coatings and Graphic Arts:  35%

  • Project management and planning, including the use of company’s NPD process
  • Prioritize projects and activities dynamically in cooperation with business development, commercial and sales teams
  • Collaborate with groups including new business development, business, synthesis, and manufacturing
  • Develop external project collaborations (national labs, universities, customers, etc.)
  • Set and operate within a budget, including capital purchases
  • Maintain and upgrade laboratory equipment and capabilities
  • Stay abreast of technical and competitive landscape in the fields of responsibility
  • Work closely with external customers to progress existing and initiate new projects
  • Hold self and subordinates accountable to deliver results on time
  • Provide timely responses to internal and external technical requests
  • Identifies new applications and customers to grow company’s Coatings and Graphic Arts businesses

Market Development:  10%

  • Represents company at tradeshows and other industry events
  • Gives technical presentations or writes papers highlighting and promoting new innovations
  • Participates in industry organizations
  • Works with marketing team to prepare collateral materials for new product promotion

Safety:  15%

  • Actively promotes safe behavior and takes responsibility for safe lab operations and continuously fosters a safe working environment
  • Works to build a positive and open safety culture
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provide by site management and company (e.g. Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury accidents
  • Participates in preparations for and responses to HES audits (AIMS, OSHA, BBS, EPA, etc.)

The UV R&D Manager travels to other company sites, customer locations and tradeshows / conferences.  Travel up to approximately 20-25%

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering. MS or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering or a related discipline highly preferred
  • Minimum of 5 or more years of R&D experience in an industrial setting
  • Experience supervising other researchers is a plus
  • Experience in product and application development and in working with customers
  • Demonstrated ability to grasp diverse technical concepts quickly
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in working with a business
  • Prior demonstrated success in developing innovative chemistry solutions to challenging problems
  • A solid knowledge of coatings and graphic arts technology, with particular emphasis on UV/EB and peroxide cure, as well as experience with (meth)acrylate functional materials and polymers, especially characterization and applications, are highly desirable
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a track record of collaborative projects
  • Demonstrated track record for innovation and new product development
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Proven track record of safe work performance
